Arabic Abstract

رغم سلاسة أسلوبه و بساطة عرضه، فقد أراد المؤلف الفيلسوف (تزفيتان تودوروف) لكتابه هذا أن يكون مرآة تنعكس عليها صورة القرن العشرين كما رآها-و تذكرها-بعين عقله.

فإلى جانب الكثير من الإنجازات التي يحق للجنس البشري أن يعتز بها، فقد عكست مرآة هذا الكتاب أسوأ ما في القرن العشرين و ركزت عليه كثيرا من أضوائها، و نقصد بهذا الأسوأ ذلك النظام السياسي المبتكر، النظام الشمولي، أو كما يدعى الحكم المطلق، و الذي تجسد في تيارين سياسيين هما الشيوعية و النازية، و هما التياران اللذان كانا وراء إفناء الملايين من البشر، كما تسببا في أبشع أشكال التعذيب و النفي و الإذلال لملايين أخرى.

مع ذلك كان أبطال هذين التيارين يدعون إلى الخير لا إلى الشر.

و لحسن طالعنا أن الديمقراطية قد تغلبت على هذا النظام، إلا أن الديمقراطية بدورها لم تكن محصنة ضد الشر، فقد أسقطت قنابلها الذرية أو (الإنسانية ! !) على هيروشيما و ناجازاكي.

و يؤكد المؤلف : (إن الاستخدام الصحيح و السليم للذاكرة هو الذي يخدم القضية العادلة، ليس ذلك الذي يكتفي بتصوير الماضي).

English Abstract

Although couched in simple language, “Memoire Du Mal, Tentation Du Bien” as its author-cum-philosopher Tzvetan Todorow, has intended, is a mirror held to images and reflections of the twentieth century as they flashed in the author’s mind’s eye.

Despite all the achievements of the 20th century and which humankind has every right to be proud of, this book has chosen to hold the mirror to the century’s worst achievements, namely totalitarianism or absolute rule which found its perfect embodiment in the rise of two political trends, communism and Nazism.

Those two trends were responsible for the savage extermination of millions of people as well as the most ruthless forms of torture, massive deportations and the humiliation of other millions.

The chief protagonists of those trends; nevertheless, seem to have been motivated by good rather than evil intentions.

Fortunately for us, democracy has been able to defeat those two ideologies.

But democracy in turn, was not immunized against evil having dropped its atomic or “humanitarian” bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The author stresses that only by a correct application of memory can we hope to serve our just causes.
