Abstract EN

Background& Objective: The dental wastes, if not dealt with properly, cause serious human and environmental consequences.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the handling and disposal of dental wastes in private dental clinics in Syria.

Materials & Methods: A survey was conducted using questionnaires givendirectly to821 dentists practicing in private clinics across Syria.Most of the participants were males, with a mean age of 38,5 years, most in age group up to 35.

The study was conducted between January and May 2010.

Results were evaluated using Chi-square test (P<0,05).

Results: 74.2% were general practitioners, while the other 25.8% were specialists.

33.7% of the participants indicated to have attended training on infection control in dentistry.

72.6% of the participants did not have any special amalgam waste disposal and 82.9% did not have any special procedures regarding dental waste.

However, only 33.1% disposed sharps in sharp container.

Conclusion: This study has provided initial data on waste management in dental clinics in Syria.

There were no effective procedures for waste separation and disposal, and the management of sharps and amalgam waste and other hazardous waste was poor.

There is a need to establish appropriate means of dental waste disposal in dental clinicsin Syria.
