Abstract EN

Background& Objective: many studies have been made about the facial structures by cephalograms, but a rare studies carried by lateral photographs to evaluate face profile in the different ethnic societies.

The aim of this study was to determine soft tissues characters in the Syrian society.

Materials & Methods: This study includes 271 photos of students with harmonious faces (122 males, 149 females).

A group of important lines and angles measurements was chosen in a special analysis, The statistical analysis has been done by using t-student test at confidence interval p<0.05.

Results: the Results showed us special facial morphologic standards as Syrians.

In this standards the protrusion of lips by females was higher respect to the males, the total and partial face length by males was higher respect to the females.

The lips and chin protrusion was less in the Syrians respect to the international studies, and the nasolabial angle was smaller in confront of the Europeans and bigger in confront of the Koreans und South Africans.

Conclusion: There is significant difference in some of profile face variables by the Syrians between the males and females especially on the lips level.

There are significant differences in some variables between the Syrians and the other ethnics groups, especially the geographically distant ones.

This indicates the presence of special morphologic form of the Syrians as an ethnic group different from the other groups.
