Abstract EN

Background & Objective: Dental anomalies are congenital defected teeth which have a certain prevalence in various malocclusions.

the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of different dental anomalies in Class I malocclusion patients seeking orthodontic treatment.

Methods & Materials: This study was carried out at the Orthodontic Department of Dentistry Faculty in Damascus University.

Data for the study were collected from the pretreatment diagnostic records of patients who reported at the department for orthodontic treatment from October 2006 to May 2010.

A total of 130 patients of both gender (47 male, 83 female) with age (10-26 yrs.), mean age 15.9 +2.7 years were evaluated for study.

All the subjects had pretreatment diagnostic records were included in the study.

Patients with syndromes, severe traumatic histories, impacted third molars, extraction of any permanent tooth were excluded from the study.

Statistical study carried by using chi square test, p>0.05.

Results: It was found that 33.1% of patients (n =130) had at least one dental anomaly.

Agenesis (missing tooth or teeth) was the most common (13.1%), followed by impaction 10.8% (canine), ectopic eruption 6.2%, peg-shaped teeth (upper lateral incisors) and supernumerary teeth 1.5% with no statistical differences, p > 0.05.

Conclusion: the prevalence of dental anomalies was different between the our and other studies, may be because of ethnical differences; the dental anomalies were presented in higher prevalence by girls but no statistical significance was deteced.
