Abstract EN

Background & Objective: It is a retrospective study of peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma for patients of the faculty of dentistry – Damascus university, and a histological comparative study of the collageneous and mineralized constituents between the lesions of the maxilla and mandible.

Methods & Materials: 50 patients aged 9 – 59 years (average 34 years old), 15 males and 35 females, defeated by peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma, were examined in the maxillofacial surgery department between 2004 and 2009.

Histological sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin were made in the department of oral histology and oral pathology, faculty of dentistry, Damascus university.

Analytical tables were set using SPSS program, issue 13.0.

Chi square test used, sig<0.05, for the statistical study of how fibroma correlates with age and gender and the study of the relation between inflammatory and endothelial cells and the location of lesion in the maxilla and mandible.

Results: lesions reached 86% between 10-39.

70% for females and 30% for males and were in the form of pedunculated or sessile tumor on the gingival papilla, 54% were ulcerated and concentrated in the incisive, 67.7% in the maxilla and 63% in the mandible.

92% of lesions were less than 1.5 cm.

No correlation was found through the statistical study between age, gender and the spread of lesion, sig<0.05.

In the histological study, the fibroblasts were young in 57.9% of the non ulcerated lesions of maxilla and adult in all the lesions of the mandible.

Mature osseous constituents of the lesions of the maxilla reached 63.1% for the non ulcerated cases, 75% in the ulcerated cases and 100% in the lesions of the mandible.

It was noticed that the dystrophic calcification existed in the ulcerated lesion at 75% for the maxilla and 66.7% for the mandible.

A statistical relationship was found between the endothelial cells and the jaw, the value of Chi square was 5.520 and Sig<0,05.

Conclusion: Fibroma appeared in the early and middle aged women and was commonly located in the anterior maxilla.

A correlation was found between the endothelial cells and the jaw.
