Abstract EN
Background & Objective: Most of prosthodontists know that patient satisfaction is not based only on the technical quality of the dentures.
For that, our study aimed to investigate the influence of some clinical factors on patients’ satisfaction with conventional complete dentures.
These factors include: patients’ gender and age, smoking, musculature of jaws and cheeks, resorption of mandibular or maxillary residual ridge, the existence of hypermobile tissues, and previous denture wearing experience.
Methods & Materials: sixty-two patients participated in our study.
The range of their ages was (47-78) years.
New complete dentures were made for all these patients.
After 4-6 weeks a card including information for our study was filled for each patient.
In addition, patients were requested to complete a questionnaire that was designed to show the degree of satisfaction with their dentures.
Results: The results of this study showed that there was a poor significant relationship between patients’ rating of mastication from one side, and the age of the patient (r=-0.3), and the musculature of jaws and cheek (r=+0.259) on the other side.
Whereas resorption of the mandibular residual ridge, and the existence of hypermobile tissues extending for more than one third of the residual ridge of one jaw had a negative and statistically important effect on patients’ satisfaction (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that patients with severe resorption in the mandibular residual ridge, and patients having hypermobile tissues extending for more than one third of the residual ridge of one jaw will show low degrees of satisfaction with their conventional dentures.
For that, it is preferable to modify the treatment plan for these patients to include implants and /or surgical removal of hypermobile tissues.
