Abstract EN

Background & Objective: To determine the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in a sample of apparently healthy people.

Materials & Methods: Cross-sectional study of 382 apparently healthy people attending Al-Assad University Hospital clinics in Damascus (not as patients).

Anthropometry (height, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure), fasting blood glucose, triglyceride and high density lipoprotein were examined for all the participants, and then the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was determined according to International Diabetes Federation and National Cholesterol Education Program / Adult Treatment Panel 3 definitions.

Results: In 382 participants (260 females, 122males), the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 37.69% (35% in females, 42.44% in males,P=0.17) according to International Diabetes Federation definition, and 34.29 %( 33.07% in females, 36.88% in males,P=0.48) according to National Cholesterol Education Program/ Adult Treatment Panel 3 (P=0.36).

The most common metabolic abnormality in females was central obesity (65.38%) then low high density lipoprotein (40.38%), and in males was central obesity (70.49%) then high triglyceride (41.8%).

Conclusions: High prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in the study sample, further larger studies are recommended
