Background & Objective: Hypovitaminosis D is linked to osteomalacia , cardiovascular disease and some autoimmune diseases.

Many studies showed that hypovitaminosis D is common worldwide, especially in the neighboring countries.

The aim of this study is to determine serum concentrations of 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 in healthy Syrians, since vitamin D status in Syria is unknown.

Material & Method: Cross-sectional study of 304 of apparently healthy people attending Al-Assad university hospital in Damascus.

Serum concentrations of 25- Hydroxyvitamin D3 were determined for all participants.

Results: In 304 participants (211 females, 93males) the prevalence of HypovitaminosisD and severe vitamin D deficiency was 97.36%, 42.43% respectively.

25 hydroxyvitamin D3 levels were less in females compared to males (11.42 ±7.49 ng/ml vs 16.7 ± 7.36 ng/ ml, P< 0.001), and in veiled women were less than in non-veiled ones (9.73 ±7.14 ng/ml vs 14.02 ± 7.30 ng /ml, P <0.001).

Conclusion: Low 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 levels is common in the study sample, despite Syria is a sunny country , further larger studies are recommended
