Abstract EN

Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) family.

Its primary functions comprise inhibiting apoptosis and regulating mitosis, which are associated with carcinogenesis.

It is over expressed in a wide spectrum of tumors including breast cancer.

Our study aimed to investigate the serum levels of survivin in patients with breast cancer and their relationship with therapy.

The study included 62 women's: 41 patients with breast cancer and 21 healthy Woman (controls).

Serum samples were collected on the first admission, before treatment and after two cycles of chemotherapy.

Serum survivin levels were determined by enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA).

The results showed that there was no significant difference in the serum levels between patients and healthy controls (P=0.38).

We found that mean serum levels of survivin was lower after chemotherapy than mean serum levels before therapy, but did not reach statistical significance (p=0.18).

Consequently, this study suggests that serum survivin levels cannot be used as a tumor marker in breast cancer patients
