Abstract EN

Background: Misoprostol is one of the drugs that have been recently used internationally to terminate pregnancy in different trimesters because of its efficiency and its cheap price.

Misoprostol is still not licensed in Syria ,Abortion is as well not allowed except in cases threatening life of the mother.

In spite of that Misoprostol under trade name of Cytotec is used unofficially to terminate pregnancy in private sector Objective: This study aims at describing the percentage and indications of use of Misoprostol in terminating pregnancy as well as determinants ,methods, and side effects of its use indirectly through studying the cases in maternity university hospital - Methods: Descriptive prospective study of 126 case of miscarriage recruited in Emergency department in maternity university hospital in the period from July 2009 to March 2010 using questionnaire prepared to meet the objectives of the study And was filled through interviews of the patients taking in consideration ethical issues Results Misoprostol was used in 29/126 (23%) of the cases to terminate pregnancy ,7/29(24%) of Misoprostol use was to terminate pregnancy without any medical indication.,15/29(52%) were missed abortion ,6/29(21%) were for maternal medical indications and one case /29(3.4%) was for inevitable abortion .There was no single protocol of Misoprostol use to follow and all were incompatible with recommended international protocols .the most important determinant of Misoprostol use was failure of contraceptive methods ,the main source of Misoprostol was the private pharmacies .

Conclusion:- Misoprostol is widely used to terminate pregnancy for different indications ,there is an urgent need to have strict legal and medical rules to regulate its use.
