Abstract EN

Background: Dentists, like other health professionals, are exposed to various occupational health problems, with specific ones of their own.

Methods: A randomly distributed sample of 107 dentists working in Damascus city was interviewed.

A questionnaire was used to detect their perception of occupational hazards.

Results: Most respondents were aware of biological hazards: 59% specifically mentioned hepatitis B virus, 79% human immunodeficiency virus, 62% back pain and 19% Legal Hazards.

Age group younger participants dentists (practitioners of less than 5 years) had adequate information about HIV as much as 90% and sufficient information about back pain by 90%, while it appeared that percentage was 77% and 66% respectively in the older age category (practitioners for more than 10 years) (p<0.05).

Conclusions: There is enough awareness of dentists in Damascus city around the majority of occupational hazards, and scientific conferences were the most prominent source of information about those risks, and the information was more within new practitioners dentists
