Abstract EN

This study reports on the development and standardization of a test to assess cognitive abilities amongst Saudi university students.

Form 1 of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT-1) includes two sub-tests: verbal and quantitative sub-tests (scales).

It was developed on the basis of Cattle-Horn-Carrol (CHC) Theory.

To conduct the standardization and establish the norms of the two sub-tests, data were obtained on 135 of Najran University level one students, ranging from 18 to 20 years in age.

With respect to validity, factor analysis was performed on the sample's data as evidence on the construct validity of the CAT-1.

The results showed that all verbal and quantitative sub-tests' items are loaded on 10 factors each and interpreted around 56.24% and 55.84% of the total variation of the two sub-tests’ data, respectively.

Factor analysis showed that CAT-1 assessed university students' cognitive abilities.

Reliabilities for all sub-tests were calculated by the split-half procedure corrected according to Spearman- Brown formula and were found to range from 0.539 to 0.701 for verbal sub-test and from 0.560 to 0.717 for quantitative sub-test.

Also, the researchers developed the needed norms in order to convert row scores into equivalent T-scores (standard scores) via which the students’ scores could be corrected, interpreted and compared
