Abstract EN

What catches the attention and creates questions about Adonis’ thought, which is founded upon a central problematic that is embodied, both critically and essentially, in the dialectic of heritage and modernity, is his rejection of the orthodox conception of poetry.

In addition to that, Adonis’ thought calls for an opposed conception of poetry which dictates, that the artistic expression of poetry is correlated with the intellectual conception of the scientist.

That is to say, poetry has an intellectual criterion in addition of that artistic one.

In this continuum, the poet as he/she is portraying things, he/she is simultaneously conceptualising.

However, the confusion and contradiction in Adonis’ conception of poetry that dwells between artistry and intellectuality, lies in his saying that the heart is the source of poetry’s intellectuality, not the mind.

This suggests that thinking poetically combines the dichotomy of vision and revelation.

Thus, the poet is a prophet, and poetry in this context, transcends into a theological landscape which is devoted to imitation and subordination which is surpassed and opposed to accomplish creativity and novelty
