English Abstract

This descriptive analytical study evaluates the development of the Sink Holes in the eastern part of the Dead Sea in Ghor Al-Haditha.

The sample included thirty-three randomly selected Sink Holes in the region in which a follow-up for their existence and dimensions was made for the period of (1995-2015) through both; satellite Images and aerial photographs processed by GIS program .

Statistical analysis has been used to find out the effect of the rainfall and some of the climatic factors such as (temperature and evaporation) on the Sink Holes development.

High temperature was found as the most effective factor on the Sink Holes formation and development.

The (Direct Shear Test) was used to study the Shear Strength on six randomly selected samples of soil from the study area.

The clayey type of the agricultural region of the study area has the highest Shear Strength record.

By surveying a curved down area containing Sink Holes on the study area, the result was an increase in Sink Holes numbers, dimensions and expansion to the west toward the Dead Sea with a semi circular shape which indicated ground water seeping toward the Dead Sea is controlling the process.

The ground water has been recharged by about (12-29)% infiltrated water of the total rainfall on the study area because of the high permeability and the flat surface there , in addition to that, the increasing seepage of ground water from the eastern side to the lowering level of the Dead Sea.
