Abstract EN

The study examined the mechanisms to protect competition, in theory, as well as identifying the international efforts in this area, especially the efforts of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

It also analyzed the most important international and Arab experiences in this field, and showed how Sudan can benefit from these experiences, as Sudan has recently introduce an Act to protect competition and prevent monopoly.

The objective of the study is to highlight the importance of the policies to protect competition under economic reforms programs such as privatization, economic liberalization, and encouragement of foreign direct investment policies.

The study adopted the descriptive approach and depended on secondary sources, which include references, periodicals, conference papers, reports, and the internet.

The study main results include the following: the existence of clear government policies that aimed at protecting competition and prevent monopoly in the local markets, have become necessary, especially in the light of the retreat of the role of the state, and the need of government intervention in order to regulate the market.

Moreover, the establishment of a Sudanese framework for the protection of competition should not be based on imitating other countries experiences in the field, but it needs deeper understanding of the nature of the economic conditions of Sudan in order for the competition policy to be compatible with the specificity of the conditions of Sudan.

The study main recommendations include the followings: the importance of activating the implementation of the Act to protect competition and prevent monopoly in the Sudan since there are many factors and developments in the local and international arena, which made it necessary to speed up its implementation.

Furthermore, those companies, which will violate the law, should be penalized strictly.

However, the rules governing this Act should be applied flexibly.
