This paper intends to investigate the axiomatic foundations of algebra, as they were presented in the book of algebra of al-Khwārizmī (9th century), and as they were developed in many subsequent Arabic works.
The paper gives also a description of algebra evolution towards a discipline independent of geometry and arithmetic: the two disciplines whose marriage had led to its birth.
By an in-depth reading of some details in the text of al-Khwārizmī, we concluded that this mathematician intended to lay down the axiomatic foundations of that new discipline.
His resort to arithmetical and geometrical means was a way of making his theory more accessible.
He used them to justify the axioms: those that were not explicitly introduced per se, and those that were remained implicit.
The paper also relies on some unedited writings of al-Khwārizmī’s successors, which could shed light on the ways they used to consolidate the foundations of algebra and improve its methods.

Cet article souligne les éléments pouvant constituer un fondement axiomatique de l'algèbre tels qu'ils se présentent dans le livre algébrique d’al-Khwārizmī (9e siècle) et tels qu’ils ont été développés dans plusieurs ouvrages arabes ultérieurs.
Il donne une idée sur le développement et l’indépendance de cette discipline née du mariage entre la géométrie et l’arithmétique.
Une lecture approfondie de certains détails du texte d'al-Khwārizmī montre son intention de lancer les bases axiomatiques de cette nouvelle discipline.
Son recours à des moyens arithmétiques et géométriques était une façon de rendre sa théorie plus accessible au lecteur, et une sorte de justification des axiomes: ceux qui ne sont pas introduits explicitement en tant que tels, et ceux qui sont restés implicites.
L’article se base également sur des écrits de certains successeurs d'al-Khwārizmī (déjà publiés ou encore inédits) qui nous éclairent sur la manière dont ils ont pu consolider le fondement et les méthodes de cette nouvelle discipline.-
