This paper deals with the approach adopted by Imam Abu Mansoor Al-Azhari (d.

370H) through the analysis of his book The Meanings of Modes of Reading.

This book is marked by research methodology which is of value to students of the discipline.

The paper focuses on his effort to defend the seven modes of reading and how he provides evidence from Arabic and examples to support a given mode of reading.
