What is important in a linguisitic study of discourse is the extent to which a speaker performs a speech act in line with certain pragmatic mechanisms with the aim of conveying an intended messege.

This is a central issue in lingusitics, specially in pragmatics.

Speech acts have been paid a lot of attention by both linguists and philosophers as they concern interaction between participant in a speech event.

By nature, a speech act is social act that is meant to actualize communication and affect the addressee in a certain way.

Example of speech acts include stating, promising, requesting, etc
