Abstract EN

The phenomenon of urban expansion is one of the major problems facing the authorities in charge of the management and urban planning, especially after the developments of transportation technology.

So the countries, especially developed, took scientific policies and procedures, which will limit the problems brought about by urban expansion.

One of these policies, is urban expansion management, by using spatial suitability models in GIS, to guide expansion into areas that would reduce these problems to a minimum limits.

Soran city is one of the cities that attracted significant interest of the Kurdistan Regional Government, resulted in dramatic evolvement within a short period of time.

The outcome are significant changes, represented the rapid growth in various directions.

The exception is the northern areas represented by the plain of Diana, which is arable land and known for soil crackle problems causing considerable damage to buildings.

Based on this, the study will try to apply spatial suitability models to guide expansion of Soran city, in order to develop appropriate solutions to the problems that appear as a result of this phenomenon.
