Abstract EN

This research deals with the classification of Maine terrains units terrain in Erbil Governorate, according to the Hammond’s classification, depending on the digital elevation data (DEM) and GIS Technic.

a digital map of the elements are derived and used in this classification such as (gentle slope, local relief and profile type), After categorized merged together To bring out the final map, In order to reach the classification the classification of Maine terrains units in Erbil Governorate And identifying terrain units that appear on the surface of the Governorate according to the Hammond’s classification.

This study concluded that the classification (Hammond) need to modify when applied in the study area determining the boundaries of high and low mountainous region to be appropriate with the terrain nature of the study are.

The classification results after modification was more accurate clearer than previous classifications.

Ten terrain classes appeared by Hammond’s classification in the Governorate, about half of the study area consists of mountains and hills.

The open hills accounted about (%32.21) percent and plains (%17.88) percent of the whole study area.
