Abstract EN
The Seljuqs, who comprised a group of Turkic tribes, entered Baghdad in 447H/1055AD after they had succeeded in establishing their state on the eastern of Iran (Khursan Region).
Having managed to eliminate the Buwayhid influence in Iraq, Sultan Tugrul Bey was cordially welcomed by the Caliph, al-Qa’im bi Amrillah (422-467H / 1037-1075AD), who recognized his authority as a sultan on all the regions and territories under his control and also bestowed the title, “King of the East and West” on him.
The aim of this research paper is to shed light on the political intermarriages that took place among the Abbasid caliphs and Seljuq sultans.
The latter became interested in such intermarriages right after entering Baghdad in order to legitimize their presence there.
Never before the advent of the Suljuqs had Abbasid caliphs considered marrying into foreign forces that took control of their caliphate like the Buwayhids for instance.
As such, the caliphate deviated from its established rule of not allowing their daughters to marry foreigners.
Nonetheless, the Seljuqs resorted to various means including enticing and threatening to convince the caliphs to agree to become their in-laws.
Due to the significance of this topic and its vitality, this research focuses on the hidden aspects of these political intermarriages which commenced upon the Seljuqs’ entering Baghdad and continued until they ceased to control the center of the caliphate.
