The current study aimed to investigate the quality of diagnostic process in special education centers and institutes in Jeddah city according to the standards of the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC) in light of a set of variables: sex, years of experience, type of the Centre/institute either Government or private setting.

The sample consisted of (429) of special education teachers working in special education centers and institutes who have been selected randomly.

The tool has been built based on the standards of the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC) that cover the diagnostic process in special education.

The tool consisted of (80) items, distributed over 6 dimensions: Leadership And Policies, program development and organization, research’s and investigation, individual and program assessment, professional development, ethical practices, and finally the cooperation dimension.

The tool was examined for validity and reliability.

The results of the study showed that the arithmetic averages ranged between (2.89-3.98), where the individual and program assessment ranked highest average (3.98), while leadership and policies got the least average (2.89).

According to Sex variable the results revealed no statistically significant differences (α = 0.05) over all dimensions and total score, while there was statistically significant differences (α = 0.05) with regard to the years of experience variable results.

The Differences were in favor of experience (15 year experience and above) in: leadership and policies, professional development, ethical practices, the program development and organization, and the research and investigation dimensions.

With regard to type of the Centre/institute, the study showed statistically significant differences (α = 0.05) in all dimensions and total score in favor of private settings.

Finally the researcher concluded a set of recommendations such as: the importance of further research studies on new samples and other variables, also he highlighted the need to adhere to global standards of The Council of Exceptional Children (CEC), and activation the rules and policies of governmental and private centers in the field of assessment and diagnosis.
