This research discusses the collected writings of nineteenth century French orientalist known as Sonneck.

His studies of popular magrebin poetry at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century uncover his perception and epistemological positions which the present article finds interesting and worthy of serious discussion.
