English Abstract

Recently years many calls have been Emerged to study and analyze the traditional architecture to explore its design characteristics, and make use of its positive elements.

This paper focuses on the rules used to formulate the traditional architecture layouts.

As the design elements concerned with the formation of two dimensional plans have certain shapes and were dealt with according to certain rules of two types : topological rules and geometrical rules, and due to the importance of the topological rules which the designer adopts first, a specific groups of rules was selected.

The problem of the paper is that there is no detailed knowledge available about the rules of layouts used in the traditional architecture within various building levels.

Accordingly the main objective is to specify the rules of layouts in traditional architecture.

To achieve this the significance of using shape rules is presented in architecture, and the types of those rules topological and geometrical rules are introduced, previous studies which deal with the space layout planning in architecture is reviewed to build a theoretical framework by choosing certain topological rules, then studying them in detail.

A case study is to be made to test the hypotheses and to conclude types of traditional layouts accordance with applied variables.
