English Abstract

The ancient districts in south Algeria-as is the case in many Arab countries- are among the architectural and urban innovations that man achieved in the past in accordance with the human building scale- these districts were erected to meet his life requirements to suit his movements in space and to protect him from the hard conditions in his environment such as bitter nature and human aggressions ....

These districts were built with available simple, and local but efficient materials The most outstanding districts, now called by their inhabitants Qsor, lie on vast areas in southern Algerian towns.

The Miya Valley where lies Ouargla town with its ancient Qsar-the study target- That was classified as a National Heritage Site in 1996.

The latter (Ouargla Qsar) which stretches on a significant part of the center of the town represented its nucleus.

Since the remote times and up till now it has kept its historical, cultural, architectural and urban value that we still see in its features.

However, because of the changing economic, social and environmental conditions and the Promulgation of the urban legislation, a certain Architectural intervention in this district and the similar districts has become a necessity.

This view is shared by all people concerned, namely, researchers, technicians and managers despite their disagreement on the way and the Kind of intervention.

Thus comes our study to look for to what extent it is possible to integrate the ancient Qsar spatially, urbanely and economically in the global fabric of the town.

The topic of our suggested paper in this meeting summarizes the basic steps for a practical research related to one of the ancient districts of an Algerian Southern town, Ouargla.

The objective of the research is to try to integrate this type of ancient districts in the present urban space of the town.

We have tried to discuss a dual issue, we often face when moving from theory to planning and design.

It is complex and reflects a certain viewpoint leading to the following question: to what extent is it possible to preserve the urban and architectural heritage of the ancient district and yet provide the habitat with the present life requirements and hence integrate it in the global fabric of the town ?
