English Abstract

Throughout its long history, Gaza has been an Arab city.

Even when it was conquered by Arab Muslims, those conquerors were the Arabs who used to frequent Gaza from all parts of Arabia before that conquest.

History and the Quran both tell us about Arabs who visited the Levant, including Gaza, in the summer and Yemen in winter.

The old city of Gaza has been marked for its special architectural features in the early Islamic era.

Examples of such architecture include the emergence of the Islamic concept known as Al-Qasaba, where the present Salah Eddeen road currently runs, and which also hosted a market and a mosque.

Along its history, Gaza has been one of the richest Palestinian cities in mosques, most of which were founded under the Memlukes who played a remarkable role in restoring architectural structures such as mosques, shrines of saints, zawaya, bemaristans, public bathhouses, inns, and like structures.

In addition the Memlukes paid special attention to Gaza because it was a center of district government and post stations which stood as living witness to the advancement in architecture at their time.

This research paper presents a study which seeks to describe and analyze old Gaza city with its unique historical significance and ancient aroma, as a means of architecturally locating this city among similar Islamic cities.

The study seeks to accomplish its objective by highlighting the components of this city in comparison with other Islamic cities as a prelude to forming the hypothesis of this study which is based on finding an answer to the following question, “Can we consider the old Gaza city an architectural model of Islamic cities ?” Answering this question will achieve another objective of this study, which is identifying the architectural features of Islamic cities ; and this is hoped to provide researchers with insights relevant to studies in the field of urban planning.
