English Abstract

Fossilization or the cessation of development in language learning is described as a widespread issue in second or foreign language learning .

It is defined as a one of the difficulties occur in teaching and learning language.

Therefore , it is necessary for ELT students and teachers to put emphasis on this issue ( Selinker 1972:22).

The researchers interpret the term fossilization from different perspectives: It is sometime interpreted as a process, a cognitive technique , or as a result of the process of learning.

It is necessary to find a method to overcome fossilization for helping English language students to achieve native-like proficiency in language learning (Skehan, 1994:122).

This study aims at assessing Iraqi EFL teachers' perception of interlanguage fossilization in the notion , types and reduction domains.

The sample of this study is 131 teachers in the intermediate and preparatory schools of Wasit Province during the academic year 2014-2015.The teachers are given the closed questionnaire in addition to the open questionnaire.

The participants show positive attitudes toward the two types of questionnaire.

The study reveals that the sample of this study has no awareness of the notion , the types and the reduction of fossilization.

Based on the study findings, and several recommendations are put forward.
