English Abstract

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the most promising technologies for current and future wireless communications.

OFDM supports high data rates that are robust to channel impairments.

However, the most important problems for OFDM transmission is firstly the deal with multi-path fading, which causes a significant degradation in terms of both the reliability of the system and the data rate, and secondly high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and reach to better performance of bit error rate (BER).

This thesis focuses on investigating the PAPR and the BER performance using a method called Finite Radon Transformation (FRAT) which is a mapper technique in comparison with the QAM mapper.

Matlab/Simulink simulation is adapted to perform an assessment of the proposed technique to measure the performance of OFDM system under the conditions of AWGN channel and Rayleigh fading channel models.

After the system was built we tested it and we obtained the results.

Then we make a comparison between the conventional QAM mapper and the Finite Radon Transform (FRAT).

The obtained result shows that the FRAT mapper improves the BER performance under AWGN channel in the QPSK and 16-QAM modes for both the UL and the DL configuration while using smaller size matrices.

Investigation the PAPR in both using the QAM mapping and the FRAT mapping showed an improvement in the smaller size matrices, which is denoted as FRAT G3 in the thesis, for the FRAT mapper on the QPSK mapping, while no improvement appeared in using the 16-QAM mapping.
