Abstract EN

The study aims at investigating relationship between university students’ usage of cell phone in the UAE and their academic performance.

The research used survey method through designing a questionnaire to meet the study’s objectives.

A sample of 280 students representing six colleges of the University of Sharjah were interviewed.

Results of the study indicate that the vast majorly of interviewed students have at least one smart cell phones.

65.0% of the students use cell phone more than five hours per day.

While cognitive and social motivations are the main motivations to use cell phones, main reasons to use cell phones are accessing social media, surfing the internet, making calls and watching videos.

Findings of the study conclude that there is a strong reverse relationship between students’ use of cell phones and their academic GPA.
