Within 12 months of the discovery of X-rays in 1895, research has appeared in the field of negative effects of high exposure of radiation.

In 1925, the First International Congress of Radiology, held in London, considered the need for a protection committee, which it established at its Second Conference in Stockholm in 1928 under the name of The International X ray and Radium Protection Committee (IXRPC), before the name was changed to become the Recommendations Committee after the 1934 meeting, then after the Second World War it became known as "the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP)".

This article celebrates the 90th anniversary of ICRP in 2018, by tracing the history of the development of its policies and identifying a few of the personalities involved from its inception to the modern era.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit international organization, registered in the United Kingdom with a scientific secretariat in Ottawa, Canada.

The Committee consists of eminent scientists and policy makers in the field of radiological protection, and all members of the Main Committee, subcommittees and task groups are volunteers.

Members of the Committee come from more than 30 countries and from all disciplines related to radiation protection.

They are included as independent experts on a voluntary basis for four years.
