The Tuati people profited from their central location between the North and South markets.

Many of them worked as intermediaries in the commodities traded in these markets.

At the same time, Tuat became an important meeting-point of the merchants who came from different places with their caravans loaded with various commodities for exchange.

The Tuwati caravan provided the necessary services for travelers: the guide had a good knowledge of the desert roads and the stars, according to Ibn Khaldun in his Kitāb al-ʻIbar or "Book of Lessons."
