Abstract EN

This research deals with a controversial issue related to the term and concept of drama in the field of criticism and theatrical studies.

For a prolonged period of time until the emergence of the modern means of communication, a prevailing conception had been used which was founded on conventional principles and rules, accomplished in a rigorous and specific framework.

The new expressive dramatic shapes have not found any place alongside the theater though they depend on the same principles of the psychology of perception and operate the same mechanism involved with basic standards of theater.

One of the most prominent rules of the traditional concept is using the development of the term "drama" to refer exclusively to the theatrical (text), and this concept is adopted by theater and critical studies limited to some partial view.

On the other hand, this concept has become seriously problematic with the appearance of the dramatic arts such as (TV, cinema and radio), beside facing the recent experiences in the areas of the novel and drama.

This has created a gap in the principles of the concept, which is supposed to be in the context of a general idea about the creative activities that have common features, and accommodate all shapes without stirring ambiguity or confusion or overlap.

In addition to that, this has prevented the term to lay the foundations of narrow standard lacking the necessary flexibility.

The research was initiated to study and discuss the adopted foundations of the traditional perspective starting from the arguments of Aristotle about the drama and its concept and the subsequent additions and modifications of other theorists up to the modern times.

The study, also, underlines the reasons for providing an effective and flexible concept in the general rules.
