A study of compliment’s responses strategies in Kurdish

Abstract EN

Since the dawn of humanity, language has been used as a medium far transmitting a message, information, or idea from speakers to listeners.

In order to eommunieate in appropriate way, speakers and listeners must have a high level of pragmatic competence .Having a high level of pragmatic competence means ability to use appropriate utterances in conversation.

Compliment and compliment responses are some of these utterances found in all cultures. The present study deals with compliment responses strategies among Kurdish students in their daily life.

The study aims at investigating the strategies used by both male and female students and showing the similarities and differences of the ways of responding to compliment by male and female students.

It is hypothesized that compliment is a kind of speech act that exists in all cultures and each language possesses its own ways of replying to compliments and the most preferred strategy by male and female participants is agreement and the expression “سدباس "is the most preferred one as it appeared in most of situations.

The analysis of data is based on Herbert model of classification of compliment responses (186،؛).

The application of this model to the selected data has revealed some findings and conclusions.
