Abstract EN

This article presents a political and economic study of the failed military coup attempt on 15 July 2016, adopting a theoretical approach on the relationship between the military coups and the economy.

It will focus on economic background during the pre-coup period to support its argument.

Similarly, the article will examine the multi-billion dollar business empires run by the Gülenists.

The paper concludes that the strong performance of the Turkish economy in the last decade, the lack of an economic crisis or the risk of a recession in the country, make it impossible for a coup attempt to garner a massive public support.
