In the essay “Secularisation et Laicisation”, the French intellectual Jean Bauberot considers that sociologists have discussed the concept of secularization in its broad meaning and have found that it means the lack of importance attributed to religion in some modem societies.

Bauberot indicates that these societies are specifically the ones which proceed according to standards of instrumental rationality which are connected to sciences and technologies.

In his opinion, this “lack” is associated with the social changes arising from the dynamics of industrial capitalism.

Hence, Peter Berger (in the year 1967) considered that the original position of secularization was the economic sphere especially “the different economic sectors whose source lies in capitalist and industrialist operations”.
