Abstract EN

This study aimed to assess the economic impacts of both public and private investment in Jordan during the period 1976-2014, by using an aggregate supply aggregate demand macroeconomic model.

The model included a set of simultaneous equations which was estimated using two stages least square (2SLS) methodology.

The results of estimation were used to calculate the marginal effect of an increase by one unit in each public and private investment on production, demand for labor, private consumption, public consumption, national exports, imports, and tax revenue.

It was found that public investment has stronger effect than private investment on the aforementioned economic variables.

Based on the results, the study suggested a number of recommendations.

First, to keep the public sector economically active, and giving it priority to access financial resources for further public investment.

Second, to give the private sector a greater role in order to downsize the public sector.

This will be reflected in reducing current expenditures while increasing capital expenditures spent on public investments
