English Abstract
The present study investigates the translation of metonymic expressions from Arabic into English.
Translating such a figure of speech can cause a deformation of the meaning and function of these expressions.
The present thesis studies the translation of metonymy with special reference to Ghassan Kanafani’s novel “Men in the Sun” by Hillary Kilpatrick to find out whether or not the metonymic expressions have been translated without deforming their meanings and functions.
The study gives an account of translation and some related issues such as: culture, literary translation and equivalence.
It studies metonymy, synecdoche, implicature and metaphor.
It highlights metonymy, including a brief account about its types and categories.
Hence, it gives some models of analysis.
Also, it analyses excerpts from Hillary Kilpatrick’s translation of Ghassan Kanafani’s novel “Men in the Sun”.
It has been found out that literal strategy of translating metonymic expressions can deform the intended meaning and function of these expressions.
The study concludes that the best translation strategy of metonymy is using their functional equivalent to convey the intended meaning of metonymic expressions
