The construction of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) which located 15 km east of the Ethiopian border with Sudan in the Benishangoul-Gumuz Region, has sparked a storm of protest in Egypt as a downstream country claiming that GERD, which at the end of the works will be the largest dam in Africa, constitutes a massive threat to its national security owing to the expected role could be played by the Dam in diminishing its share of water from the River Nile that the Blue Nile contributes almost 85% of its waters to it.

The River Nile is known to be the main source of 96% of drinking water for Egyptians .

This study examines some of the challenges that expected to face the interrelation of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia as a result of the GERD construction, in particular the Egyptian relation with the other two countries.

Egypt inflamed the situation by its demand that Ethiopia cease the construction of the on the dam, while Sudan expressed its strong support to its construction.

It concludes that most probably the construction of the dam will be having a negative impact on the relations between Egypt and each of the other two countries, and hence could endanger the regional peace and security.
