Sustainable development refers to the right of future generations to preserve the available resources.

Water is one of the most important natural resource as it is necessary for the continuation of the life of organisms.

The large number of scientific studies and research in the field reflect the growing interest in this resource as a major subject.

As a source for sustainable development, the issue of water has become a chief theme of interest to a growing number of researchers.

The shared aim is to reduce the depletion of this key resource.

This study aims, therefore, at the analysis of the ways and means to undertake an efficient rationalization of water use.

It also seeks at defining the theoretical framework of the subject of water as a sustainable development.

The experiences of Germany and Australia will be analyzed.

The former experienced several processes to reduce and control water losses; the latter, after exposure to recurrent and increasingly climatic droughts, has undertaken varied procedures, the most important of which has been the desalination of sea water and ensure its accessibility to all through appropriate costs
