Abstract EN

Introduction:This research studies the effect of vitamin E intake on lipid peroxidation and some antioxidants as well as some biochemical parameters among a group of football players after aerobic exercise.

This experiment assesses the effect of vitamin E on reducing oxidative stress in athletes after performing aerobic exercise while matches or trainings; thereby trying to find out a means of protection from the adverse effect of free radicals.

Methods : The researcher used experimental trial for its appropriateness with the nature of the research.

This experiment used 16 professional first-line soccer players of Ala football team in Erbil City in 2011-2012.

Three venous blood samples were obtained from the subjects at three different occasions.

The first sample was obtained prior to exercise (resting); the second sample directly after aerobic exercise, and the third sample was obtained 30 days after regular ingestion of 400 IU per day of vitamin E by the experimental group after aerobic exercise.

For each sample, serum levels and concentrations of the following parameters were estimated : Malondialdehyde, vitamin E, glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase enzyme, cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), high density lipoproteins (HDL), and low density lipoprotein (LDL).

Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version15.

Aims:This study aimed at : 1- Assessing the effect of vitamin E on lipid peroxidation and some antioxidants in the experimental group of athletes at rest, after exercize and later after one month of vitamin E ingestion.

2- Assessing the effect of vitamin E on biochemical parameters in the experimental group of athletes at rest, after exercize and later after one month of vitamin E ingestion.

3- Comparing the differences of the effects of vitamin E intake on lipid peroxidation, antioxidants and other biochemical parameters among the experimental vs.

control groups of athletes after aerobic exercise.

Hypotheses : 1- Presence of significant differences in results of lipid peroxidation and some antioxidants after aerobic exercise between the pre-exercise (resting) test, first test and second test.

2- Presence of significant difference in results of biochemical parameters after after aerobic exercise between the pre-exercise (resting) test, first test and second test.

3- Presence of significant difference between the second test results of lipid peroxidation, antioxidants and biochemical parameters between the experimental vs.

control groups of athletes after aerobic exercise.

Results: 1- Vitamin E intake by the experimental group of players caused significantly higher levels of vitamin E, glutathione, superoxide dismutase enzyme at test two compared to their levels at resting test and test one.

2- Vitamin E intake had no significant effects on the levels of Malondialdehyde, cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoproteins, and low density lipoproteins in the three test occasions.

3-The experimental group of athletes had significantly higher levels of vitamin E, high density lipoprotein when controlled to the control group.

4-There were no significant differences in the levels of Malondialdehyde, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, cholesterol, triglycerides, and low density lipoproteins among the experimental vs.

control groups of athletes.

Recommendations: 1-Emphasis on the need to give vitamin E to football players under medical supervision.

2-Conducting future studies giving higher doses of vitamin E and for longer durations.

3-Conducting future studies on athletes of other sport activities and anaerobic exercise among different age and gender groups.

4-Estimation of other enzymes and antioxidants like glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and catalase in the serum.

5-Conducting future studies that involve nutritional supplements and supplements of other vitamins to athletes.

6-Conducting future studies on larger sample size.
