Abstract EN

The Bahri Mamluk period of 648-784H / 1250-1382AD witnessed a vibrant intellectual renaissance whereby scholars were held in high esteem.

Their status grew within the society of that time and they landed proper positions.

During this period women played their intellectual role in the Mamluk society actively and freely.

They were not far away from such activities.

Rather, they received a good share of knowledge and education.

There was no distinction between men and women in the domain of intellectual life.

Due to their energetic participation in such activities, women earned a high stature.

Intellectual women fared very well during the Bahri Mamluk period as they received accolade from sultans and princes who treated them with enormous respect.

This status was a reflection of how such women were perceived by the society.

They were ingenious and of high morals.

They were among the best that the Islamic civilization had to offer to the world over the centuries.

Women’s intellectual contribution was not confined to one area alone.

It expanded to include tradition (Hadith), jurisprudence, teaching the holy Koran, literature and poetry.

A majority of these women were the products of respectable houses of knowledge and many of them hailed from prominent families such as the Sabki, Ibn Daqiq al-Eid and others that begot female scholars whose contributions are discussed in this research paper
