Abstract EN

The research aims at examining the electoral processes which have taken place in the period of establishing the modern Iraqi state in the beginning of the1920's.

it also tries to make an objective analysis of those experiences and use this analysis to develop the current democratic process in today's Iraq.

Both the constitution and the electoral systems under the royal regime (1921- 1958) have been examined in details, and both of the positive and negative sides of those systems have been remarked.

It was concluded that the unconstrained authorities, the constitution gave to the king affected negatively the political situation in the country.

Thus, the many governments which have been elected did not reflect the desire of the Iraqi people but that of the royal family.

The royal electoral system did not give the opportunity to all of the social classes to take part in the elections, especially the women, and was in the favorite of the rich classes and groups.

Finally, the research concluded that the intervention of the British government in the interior affairs of Iraq made the Iraqi politics inefficient and following the British interests and strategies in the region.
