The study investigates the causlaity between poverty, inequality and economic growth in developing countries using panel data series covering the period 1970-2013, within a vector autoregressive model (VAR), by applying a modified version of the Granger causality test due to Toda and Yamamoto (1995).
The paper aims to contributing to the literature by utilizing the recently develop Thail index instead of the traditional Gini coefficient because of its advantages for developing countries.
The results indicate that there is bi-directional causality between poverty rate and economic growth while there is no causality between poverty, inequality and economic growth.
The results indicate that poor people benefit from the gains of economic growth.
