Abstract EN
Islamic banking industry is now witnessing a period of cumulative growth that enabled it to gain a full market access.
It is, therefore, important to understand the structure of the Islamic banks and the factors contributing to its returns in order to improve its performance and efficiency.
This issue has been further examined and analyzed in this study which applied market power hypothesis on the methodology by comparing Islamic banks to traditional ones in the GCC banks market.
The study sample included 95% (covering 57 banks) of the GCC banks, including UAE, Kingdom of Bahrain, Kuwait and KSA through 6 years.
Market power hypothesis included structure-conduct-performance hypothesis and traditional efficiency hypothesis which were tested using linear regression.
Return on assets (ROA) was tested as an indicator of profitability.
The study also tested indicators of concentration and market share.
Results showed that in some countries, Islamic banks tend to have a more concentrated base, but further analysis of the relation between concentration and performance showed that only traditional banks make use of their concentration in achieving high returns.
In general, Islamic banks did not use concentration in the market to impose non-competitive prices.
Their concentration may be explained by novelty in comparison to traditional banks or their early entrance to the market which drove them to acquire high market share as they attract a certain category of investors and creditors.
Based on the results, the study recommended that banks market organizers in the GCC countries should enact laws and legislations that reduce the effect of market power on concentration, contribute to the financial liberalization, support competitiveness in banks sector, maintain the existing balance in banks market, prevent monopoly and concentration, and encourage banks to increase their efficiency.
