The international community has approved a set of decisions that guaranteed the rights of accused persons to a fair trial and also protected their dignity during the various phases of a criminal trial.

Another set of guarantees was made to preserve their rights while serving their sentences.

Such guarantees include, United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights issued by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 10,1948, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the American Convention issued in December 1966.

These treaties provide a universal basis on which nations drew up their constitutions and legislations, specifically criminal laws.

Moreover, they are considered an indication of progress and development, and signify the establishment of a unified legal system for the international community.

It could be stated that man-made laws did not form unanimity regarding such rights and freedoms unless after centuries of intense violations and oppressions against human rights that cannot be ignored through generations.

These rights were not approved until violations and oppression became widespread.

At this point, such sufferings turned to be the subject of various writings of human rights activists, philosophers, thinkers, and sociologists, as well as, those interested in political and legal studies.

Their relentless efforts, finally, brought about a drastic change in the relation between the accused persons and courts.

They have been granted full right to have a fair trial guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
