Abstract EN

Information plays an important role in the decision-making process.

This role is determined by the level of the librarian as a decision-maker, the stages it goes through and the nature of this decision to become rational and appropriate.

It is necessary to control the information that may exist from a previous records or it may be new that should be collected.

The aim of this research was to know whether librarians use information in making rational decisions concerning the operation of the acquisition of books for the libraries of El Hadj Lakhdar University-Batna 1- Algeria and how they use it.

The descriptive method was adopted as it fits the current study.

It Allows describing and analyzing the content and acquisition processes in these libraries.

The population of the study consists of all the staff responsible for the management of acquisitions in the library.

It consisted of both administrative and technical staff in the libraries.

The study used the questionnaire as a data collection tool.

Data will be used in the analysis and interpretation based on theoretical background and comparisons of data collected.

The questionnaire was divided into three points : 1.

Utilization of the data obtained from bibliometric studies.

2.

Studying the prices and comparing them with what exists and available in the publishers’ lists.

3.

Controlling of both materials and human resources in the libraries.

To confirm validity of the tool, it was pretested by a group of academicians and after the final modification the tool was produced in a final form.

After the analysis, interpretation of the data and comparing it with acquisition theoretical trends, many results were obtained.

The most important onewas that the libraries of El Hadj Lakhdar University –Batna 1- Algeria do not exploit the data from any source to use in decision making while processing acquisitions.

They do not also organize the collection properly to inform their decision making process.

Hence, the operation of the acquisition is based on arbitrary data that leads to failure.

It is recommended todevelop a comprehensive data management system connecting all the units that serve the university libraries, especially those that are run by specialized librarians and technicians.

This system would help staffto utilize data and to makeinformed decisions.

It enhances decision making through consultation and dialogue between them and also promoting what is known as teamwork in the libraries.
