This study attempts to trace a short history to the detective novel - which is the one of the most popular and famous literary kinds in the modern literature - and especially its theory which means the elements and circumstances which contributed in its genesis and development like : the city, police, capitalism, positivist philosophy, we try also to explain the relation between those elements and the structure and thematic of the detective novel, finally : we have concluded its relation with occidental modernity
