Abstract EN

This research explores an important feature of modern Arabic poetry, that being the City and the way it is portrayed through poetry.

This study seeks to reveal how the city caused poets to depart from what inspired them to write their verses, which was nature.

Poetry derives its essence and strength from natural environments, such as the valleys, the villages and the forests, etc.

Since the poet is now in the urban modern city, removed from inspirational settings, the question now becomes: how is he able to represent the city in his poetry? And did all the poets in the modern city write about similar themes or did each poet address different matters that deserve observation and analysis? There had been previous articles and research papers that had dealt with the topic of Poetry and the City and they have been referred to in this research.

A number of Kuwaiti poets have written about a variety of cities: Arab cities, Western cities, and the capital of Kuwait, Kuwait City itself.

These poems reflect different views, thoughts and a whole range of various feelings and emotions regarding the poet’s life in the modern city.

The research is divided into three parts: The first part is concerned with illustrating the relationship between poetry and nature.

It explores how the Bedouin or the pastoral life or environment acts as an inspiration for the poet.

The second part reviews some of the important previous works that have examined the topic of poetry in the modern city.

The third section aims to shed light on the modern poetry of Kuwaiti writers.

This part includes a statistical report that records the number of poems authored by Kuwaiti poets who addressed the modern city or its inhabitants.

Finally each poem is placed under a certain category.

There are four categories which are: The City of the Nation, The Aesthetically Pleasing City, The Utopian City and the Dystopian City.

Each category is well-defined, their properties well-clarified by the use of certain examples.

Essentially, the richness of Kuwaiti modern poetry is revealed in this research.
