Abstract EN

For the period from June 2010 to May 2011, water samples from eight wells in Aljadriah district-Baghdad, were evaluated chemically and classified.

Results revealed significant variation with time and location.

Hydrogen Activity of wells water ranged from 6.85 to 7.81, the Electrical Conductivity (EC) ranged from 1.42-3.88 dS.m1 and Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) 0.69-4.69.

Dissolved oxygen ranged from 1.86-5.80 ppm.

The Turbidity ranged from 0.21-6860 Nephelometric, and the Hardness from 0.26 to 6800 mg.L - 1 .Water quality of wells water were classified according to three systems (Guides) , USDA 1954; the classes were C3-S1, C3-S2, C4-S1 and C4-S2, FAO 1985; the classes were sever problem, slight-moderate problem and according to FAO 1992; they were moderate saline water, primary drainage water and ground water.

With all above classification systems, there was no risk from Sodium Adsorption Ratio to affect soil permeability.

Wells water can be consider as subsurface water, suitable for irrigation under good management, by using extra amount of water with leaching requirement of 15%-20%, according to FAO guide 1985 and 1992 and under certain conditions under good management, drainage system, deep ground water to keep soil salt balance and planting highly salt tolerant plants.

It is important to avoid using wells water for animal consumption because of its high salt content and the risk of diarrhea or even death of the animal. For Civilian uses WHO guide 2011, which is recommended used by Iraqi Ministry of Environment and Quality Control Central Foundation, the water is not good for human use unless treated in water sterilization and Filtration stations and can be use for local and public gardens irrigation.
