Abstract EN

The purpose of this paper is to trace the rise of the Mahdist Revolution against the Turko –Egyptian rule in the Sudan and the Anglo –Egyptian relations during that era till December/1884.The Mahdi defeated the Egyptian forces in the Sudan in many battles , which led Cairo Government to prepare for a crushing defeat of the Mahdi forces by British help.

The British Government refused to intervene in the Sudan but they raised no objection to the appointment of William Hicks as a leader of an Egyptian expedition to the Sudan .

Hicks was defeated at the battle of Shaykan in 5/November/1883, and the Egyptians had no other forces to continue military operations in the Sudan .So they requested the assistance of British, Indian or Turkish troops to hold the Sudan , The British Government rejected this proposal and recommended the evacuation of the Sudan in January 1884, and they imposed Gordon for the mission.

Gordon failed in establishing a new Sudanese Government and withdrawing the garrisons Moreover he was isolated from London and Cairo as a result of the complete besiege of khartum by al- Mahdi.

He remaind at Khartoum waiting for the relief expedition to arrive in time .

But in 17/Janury /1885 a fight took place at Abu Tulayh, and the news of the battle reached al –Mahdi who at once captured Khartum
